Ground Casualty
The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) was a mechanized infantry unit which conducted reconnaissance, surveillance, and security missions. Arriving in Vietnam in September 1966, it utilized armored personnel carriers and medium tanks and could attack or defend with either mounted or dismounted infantry. On November 1, 1969, elements of L Troop, 3rd Squadron, 11th ACR, were conducting a training exercise four kilometers (2.5 miles) northeast of Tonle Cham Airfield in Binh Long Province, RVN, when a firing accident critically injured a tank crewman. PFC Victor M. Guerrero was the loader during the exercise when another individual fired the main gun on the tank with the breech open. Super-heated gases escaped the breech inflicting 2nd and 3rd degree burns on Guerrero and another crewman. He was medivacked to the 24th Evacuation Hospital on Long Binh Post, then two days later flown to the U.S. Army burn center at the 106th General Hospital at Camp Zama in Yokohama, Japan, where he expired November 15, 1969. Guerrero was 18 years old. He was posthumously promoted to Corporal. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
