Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Vernell Dwight Carlson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

The Faces Behind the Names

Vernell Dwight Carlson
Marine Corps Private First Class
Born: November 17, 1946
Died: December 26, 1966

Vernell Dwight Carlson was born November 17, 1946 and died December 26, 1966. He received his first Purple Heart from General Westmoreland on November 12, 1966.
Vern graduated from Mora High School in Mora, Minnesota in 1965. He was a really fine son and brother, and was loved by family and friends. Vern became engaged to be married when he was home on leave in May, 1966. Vern's first injuries happened November 10, 1966, from a mine blast.
The following are excerpts from Vern's last five letters:
November 21
On the 19th they sewed me up, it took 15 stitches to do a good job. I'm getting along pretty good and feeling okay.
P.S. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and eat some turkey for me, ok!!
"God bless you all."

November 26
This morning they took out half the stitches and in two days they will remove the rest. Dad, you're right Minnesota is a pretty good state even if we get a lot of snow. Keep remembering me in prayer-I know you will.

December 4
Dad, you were wondering if I could get out of Vietnam because I was injured. I'm afraid I can't, but sure wish I could. Dad, I didn't join the Marines, the Marines joined me. But I'm glad I'm in it.

December 8
Well 1966 is just about coming to a close. When January comes I can start going downhill. It sure will be the happiest day of my life when I can be back in Minneapolis airport again. I'll never forget this place for as long as I live. You'd be surprised what goes on here sometimes.

December 12
This morning I went on a patrol and this afternoon went on one again. Tonight we have the ambush. We go out at 8:00 and come back at 12:00. We now have tents to sleep under and cots to sleep on, so now I can sleep a little better. Well, Mom and Dad, I'm sorry I haven't written sooner. I will close now and write tommorrow (I hope). Give my love to the rest of the family for me ok! Have a Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year.
Your Son Vern

Vern Carlson died 14 days after the last letter was written.
