Gentle strength

I found your name when the traveling wall came to Sonora. You could not have known how much your death impacted me. I was friends with your brother, Anthony. On what I think was your last visit home, you demolished a stucco shed in your back yard with your bare hands and feet. I was amazed to see the controlled strength from such a gentle soul. It is the kind of strength I will always consider to be exemplary. Blessings to you, Anthony, if you are to see this.

You are not forgotten

Today I brought flowers to your grave for the 50th anniversary of your death. You came to my St. Isidore School 7th grade class and spoke to us about the work you had done for our parish's mission in Mexicali. I can still picture you in the front of the room. A few short months later you were gone. I couldn't believe it--you were only 19. I have thought of you so many times over the years and find comfort thinking that God, in His wisdom, saw that your earthly work was done and spared you any more horrors of war. Even after all this time, you are an inspiration to me.
