Served with Gerald

Gerald and I arrived in-country together - we both were Sergeant E-5 - infantry. We traveled together ending up assigned to Delta Company, 1st Bn, 20th Inf, 11th Inf Bdg, Americal Division. We were promoted to SSG E-6 on the same day. We were great friends. I was on R&R (Bangkok) when Gerald was killed. It took me 42 years to locate and visit his grave (Oct. 2012). I let Gerald know that his Delta Brothers will always have him in our hearts and his family will always be in out prayers. Also, I was able to locate and visit with his brother James. Finally, closure.

Thanks

Dear SSGT Gerald Butler,
Thank you for your service as an Infantryman. As another summer comes to an end, it is important for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

My uncle Jerry.....Toad

I visited you Jerry....last week on vacation...I made my way to Harborcreek and walked the green path to your grave. I still remember vividly all the memories as I grew up with you around.....your Mo-ped.....You and Dick Carney....the head rubs that hurt...lol. the paintings you did...the stereo and all your LP albums. Now in my sixties and as a retired Marine...I still cry. After all these years I still miss you. But I carry on...and salute you my brother in arms. Semper Fi Toad....I'll join you some day. "LEST WE FORGET". Jimmy

Yellow Roses

Diane, I visited the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial here in Middleburg Heights last week and saw your husband's name, remembered the nightmare of it all, the yellow roses and then said a prayer for you both. I truly hope you are well. I also recall that you just got back from R&R when this tragedy happened. You and I worked together at PCGH and you might remember me as Mo. 6 Odd W/S.
