My Mentor

Diane it has been 46 years to the date (4-20-16) since Gerald was killed in Vietnam. He was the 3rd platoon SSgt. and I was a SSgt for the 4th platoon. I came in country October 69 and Gerald was like a mentor to me and many others. All we wanted to do was to grow up and find the love of our life and raise a family. But our stupid government had to send us all off to fight a war that ill conceived with no strategy to win or exit the mess we were in. Sadly, 46 years later USA still gets involved in wars we don't need. I think of Gerald often, and I vividly remember the radio transmissions that broadcasted that he was Killed in action. Such a great loss.

My Loving Husband

Jerry will always be in my heart. I have only fond memories of all the time we had together. Jerry always spoke fondly in his letters to me of his men. I thank you all for your remembrances. I have never remarried and am now living in Kalispell, Montana.

I read his memorial service prayer The Prayer of St. Francis "Make me a channel of your peace..." and it is a wonderful soul searching prayer.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SSGT Gerald Thomas Butler, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Great Uncle

This was my great uncle. I never got to meet him as he died serving our country. I am so blessed to know that he was able to defend our counrty. I have heard so many stories about him from family and know that had I meet him, he would have been an awesome uncle to all of us.

Gerald

He was a great husband to my sister and served our country when called. Today, Veterans Day 2012, I was in DC at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Once again, I cried over the loss of this fine man.

See you one of these days Jerry and the Rolling Rock will be on me.
