REMEMBRANCES

LEFT FOR JAMES TERRY ABBOTT
POSTED ON 4.3.2024
POSTED BY: Julian Barker, "CoolJ"

I was Jim’s partner that night, I was with him when he died.

We had celebrated his first child, a Girl? Turns out it was a Boy but the cigar I smoked said "it’s a Girl" apparently Jim had bought some of both just in case, I have since spoken with his son, a fine man, Jim is proud of him I’m sure.
I’m very proud that we were able to keep the murderer from killing our commanding officer ( and others as well). Jim exchanged fire, but the murderer struck first on full auto m-16.
Jim’s actions caused the gunman to panic and he tried to flee, allowing his hostage to escape (if you were the hostage, you owe your life to James Abbott).
In the panic I was able to corner the murderer, he gave up after a short standoff and I arrested him. I think he wound up in Leavenworth.
Jim’s action may have saved my life also by putting the bad guy into flight mode.
I remember every moment of it and I thank you James for your bravery.
I’ll never forget you.

Ground Casualty

SP6 James T. Abbott was a Criminal Investigative Division (CID) Special Agent assigned to the 101st Criminal Investigative Detachment, 101st Military Police Company, 101st Airborne Division. At the beginning of 1971, Abbott was with a contingent of approximately fifteen MPs at Camp Evans located northwest of Hue in Thua Thien Province, RVN. Their duties included base security and patrolling a stretch of National Route QL-1 outside the main gate. At approximately 9:00 PM on January 11, 1971, the MP headquarters at Evans received a call that a 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division Platoon Sergeant armed with a M16 rifle had taken a hostage and was threatening to kill his Commanding Officer. Abbott and another MP responded, working their way over to a hooch where they could see the disgruntled paratrooper inside. When Abbott breached the open doorway, the suspect fired, striking him seven times. He then rushed the door and fled into the night. He later surrendered his rifle and was taken into custody. Attempts to revive Abbott were unsuccessful, and he expired shortly after being hit. It was reported that one of the rounds had deflected into his abdomen, severing a main artery hastening his demise. The following morning, a memorial service was held for Abbott conducted by the battalion chaplain. The shooter was put on a helicopter and flown to Camp Eagle where he was processed, later transferred to the United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, where he remained while awaiting trial. Abbott was posthumously awarded the Soldier's Medal. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and odmp.org]
