Not Forgotten

I have not forgotten you. I chair the Adoption Committee for The National League of Families of Prisoners of War and Missing in Action in Southeast Asia. We will always remember the 1,889 Americans still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia and the thousands of others that lost their lives. We will not stop our efforts until all of you are home where you belong.

We need to reach the next generation so that they will carry on when our generation is no longer able. To do so, we are attempting to locate photographs of all the missing. If you are reading this remembrance and have a photo and/or memory of this missing American that you would like to share for our project, please contact me at:

IN REMEMBRANCE OF A FINE AIR FORCE PILOT WHOSE NAME SHALL LIVE FOREVER MORE

ON 15 MARCH 1966

CAPTAIN

MARTIN RONALD SCOTT

WAS THE PILOT OF AN

F4C PHANTOM FIGHTER / BOMBER

ASSIGNED A MISSION OVER NORTH VIETNAM.

HIS BOMBARDIER / NAVIGATOR

ON THE FLIGHT WAS A VETERAN PILOT

LIEUTENANT COLONEL

PETER JOSEPH STEWART

THE FLIGHT DEPARTED UBON AIRFIELD, THAILAND IN THE LATE AFTERNOON FOR THE ARMED RECONNAISSANCE FLIGHT THAT WOULD TAKE THEM OVER THE CITY OF DIEN BIEN PHU IN NORTH VIETNAM.
SCOTT AND STEWART WERE NUMBER TWO IN A TWO PLANE FLIGHT ABOUT ONE MILE SOUTH OF DIEN BIEN PHU AIRPORT WHEN THE FLIGHT LEADER SPOTTED TWO TRUCKS ON THE MAIN HIGHWAY AND DIRECTED THE NUMBER TWO CREW TO MAKE A LOW LEVEL BOMBING PASS. MOMENTS LATER THE LEADER OBSERVED WHAT HE LATER DESCRIBED AS A DENSE EXPLOSION RESEMBLING A NAPALM DROP IN THE TARGET AREA BUT REPEATED EFFORTS TO RAISE THE NUMBER TWO AIRCRAFT FAILED AND BOTH SCOTT AND STEWART WERE DECLARED AS

MISSING IN ACTION.

BECAUSE THIS AIRCRAFT WENT DOWN IN A HEAVILY POPULATED AREA DEEP INSIDE ENEMY TERRITORY AN ORGANIZED RESCUE SEARCH WAS NOT POSSIBLE.

IN 1972 THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE RECEIVED A REPORT FROM A REFUGEE WHO STATED HE WAS SHOWN THE CRASH SITE AND THE GRAVES OF THE TWO PILOTS STATING THE AIRCRAFT WAS THE ONLY ONE SHOT DOWN IN THAT AREA BUT THIS COULD NEVER BE SUSTANTIATED.

BOTH MEN WERE POSTHUMOUSLY PROMOTED TO THE RANK OF COLONEL.

PER ARDUA AD ASTRA

YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN

NOR SHALL YOU EVER BE
