'Proud Of Being A Marine' Area Youth Killed In Viet

Pfc. David John Scharibone was "proud of being a Marine," according to his mother, Mrs. Salvatore Scharibone of 862 White Horse-Hamilton Square Road, Hamilton Township.
In a letter from Vietnam dated May 5, "he seemed happy with what he was doing," his aunt, Mrs. Donald Singer, said today.
"But he was counting the days until he'd be home," she added.
Saturday, eight days after the letter was written, David Scharibone was killed in action. He was 20 years old.
He died of head and chest wounds received while fighting near Vietnam's Demilitarized Zone, a Marine Corps spokesman told the family yesterday.
It was the second time in two months that the young Marine had been hit. Scharibone was wounded in the hand and leg in fighting near Chu Lai on March 12.
He was back in action 12 days later. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
Scharibone had been in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division since January. He would have returned to this country in February, 1968.
He enlisted for a two-year hitch with the Marines last summer, about a month after being graduated from Hamilton High School, Mrs. Singer said.
Scharibone had been employed by Korvettes and Castranova Beauty Supply Company. He was last home for a month last November and spent Thanksgiving Day with his family.
Mrs. Singer said her nephew planned on becoming a New Jersey State Trooper after getting out of the Marines.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Debra Jean and Tracy Lynn, both living at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scharibone of Hamilton Township; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Helen Singer of Trenton, and several aunts and uncles.

Semper Fidelis, Marine!

Just Because

I would like everyone to remember David just because....I never knew him. But my father along with the Vietnam Veterans United built a Monument in Hamilton Square New Jersey. And the day of the opening ceremony I was just driven to his stone, I do not really know why. I would just like everyone to remember those who we lost in that war. David John Scharibone, to me is just a name, but he does have family and I am sure they miss him dearly.
Signed,
Daughter of a Vietnam Vet
