this makes me sad

i did not know him, but i knew the name. we loved boetje's mustard. my mother would not have anything else. we lived on 12st street in rock island a few blocks from their building. i saw it all the time. i am two years older than him and went to alleman high school. i graduated from college about the same time he got killed so at that time was not even remotely thinking about what he was going through. i will make this comment about his picture somewhere in Vietnam. he looked happy and fulfilled like he was doing something manly and important. i know this feeling. i know the look in the picture because i often had this feeling when i was in Vietnam two years later.. the big difference being he was killed and i was not. and let me tell you, no i can not tell you. he is gone. so young i am still here so old. i saw a lot of sunsets; climbed a lot on mountains; knew a lot of women; had three kids; and made a lot of money. he missed all of that and more. people missed him. so sad he would have done fine and had a happy life in rock island. i would have like to have been his friend.
