To my Cousin, my hero

Thank you Billie for your service to our Country for which you gave the most precious thing - your life. I was only 10 when I had to learn about shrapnel and death. I can still remember those days. Bless you Billie Boetje.

RIHS CLASS OF '66

Bill, every time I visit my parents grave I walk up the hill and visit yours. We had such fun in high school. I still think of you often, certainly this time of year. See you later Buddy.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 William Wayne Boetje, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

My high school classmate's cousin.

Bill's cousin and I were seniors at Rock Island (Illinois) Senior High School, Class of 1964. As someone else has said, their family produced Boetje's Mustard, which is still internationally known and savored.

The Boetjes are good people and good Americans, and I vaguely remember Bill as being a happy sophomore.

I know how hard his death hit his cousin and the rest of their family ... and still does.

Even if the strategic planning and political leadership of the Viet Nam War was mishandled, our involvement in the war was in defense of the Indochinese people and was a just war as can be seen by what happened after we withdrew.

Those who went to Viet Nam - and especially those who died there - are the true heroes of our generation, and young Bill Boetje stands tall among them.
