Ground Casualty

PFC Robert “Robbie” P. Sanchez Jr. served with A Battery, 6th Battalion, 27th Artillery, II Field Force, U.S. Army, Republic of Vietnam. In late spring 1971, A Battery was located at Fire Support Base Buttons, two miles south of Phuoc Binh (Song Be) in Phuoc Long Province, RVN, where it had recently been redeployed from a firebase near the Cambodian border. A Battery was a heavy artillery unit with 8” and 175mm guns. Upon his arrival with A Battery, PFC Sanchez was put on the night shift and trained for duties in the Fire Direction Center (FDC). These responsibilities included computing gunfire data, telecommunications, and political, military, civilian, and aviation clearances for firing the big guns. The artillerymen in A Battery were billeted in structures comprised of 72" culvert half-pipes made of corrugated steel. For added protection, they covered them with three layers of sandbags. After midnight on June 1, 1971, they were called to a Red Alert when a nearby Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) firebase was being assaulted by the enemy. About an hour later, an all-clear was sounded, and they returned to their bunks. It was at this time Sanchez was found dead at his bed with a self-inflicted wound to the head from his assigned M16 rifle. The following morning, a CID team came by helicopter from Long Binh and conducted an investigation. When they finished, they bagged Sanchez’ remains and returned to Long Binh with his body. Remembering an American Hero

Dear PFC Robert Paul Sanchez Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
