Ground Casualty
SP4 James W. Rowlett was a combat engineer serving with C Company, 19th Engineer Battalion. In 1966, his combat engineer company in Vietnam was mostly building airfields and oil pipelines. Despite the risk of death due to enemy attack, SP4 Rowlett was the only fatality the company suffered that year. On September 27, 1966, Rowlett was attempting in the dark to repair a tire on a 2 ½ cargo truck which normally requires protective caging to perform. An explosion occurred when the locking rim blew off and instantly crushed his chest. A medic arrived at once, however, his internal injuries were so severe he passed quickly, never regaining consciousness. Remembering An American Hero
Dear SP4 James Wesley Rowlett, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
