To A Fellow Marine

I’m working on displaying images and letters of service members across the branches and across all conflicts when I came across Mark Black’s photographs. I had the honor to listen to his final audio letter recorded four days before he passed. As a fellow Marine, I feel connected to this young man and am deeply touched by his bright presence and his selfless sacrifice. Sharing his experience of war is enlightening, and I am forever grateful to his family for sharing his life, his story, and such intimate audio letters and images with the world. May his memory live on forever. I’ll be visiting the Wall and will say hello to LCpl Black.

Semper Fidelis, Marine.

Went to boot camp with Mark

Mark and I were in the same platoon in boot camp in 1966. I believe he joined with a friend named Tom Lobsiger (?). They were great people to go through basic training with and were always in the front when we were out running in weapons training in Camp Pendleton and in San Diego. I remember both wanted to be in the infantry, but Mark was picked for it and Tom wasn't. I remembered how distraught Tom was and how said I felt when I read of Mark's passing in 1967. RIP, Mark.
