WoW

In response to the recent post by Darlene... We both had similar experiences. I too lived above the Bivens and considered Herndon a cousin. I was three years old at the time and we lived there in 1966, 67, if my math and memories are correct. I have posted most of the pictures on the websites relating to Herndon, having spoken with the men he served with and others with similar experiences as ours. It is remarkable to hear of so many he has touched. Thank you for your sharing your experience "cousin."

I Never Forgot You

My name is Darlene Andrews-Gilchrist and my late parents(Bobby and Carrie Andrews)along with my grandmother(Helen Bassett)lived in the apartment upstairs in "Uncle B and Auntie Stein's"house. It is the very first home I remember living in since I was just a baby when we moved in.I remember Herndon always putting together model planes and it was very intricate work. He would always let me sit in his room with him and watch, but he ALWAYS put me out because i would ALWAYS try to touch one of them! That was a no-no and I had to go!! LOL I never forgot my Auntie Stein, my Uncle b or Herndon(who I called "cousin"). May God bless you and all who loved you as we did.

Inspiration

In my neighborhood Herndon was our "older brother", a hero and one of my peer influences in attending an Ivy League University ultimately leading to me becoming a general surgeon. I still have his bracelet and will leave it to my son. I think of him always; he and his parents exerted a key influence on my life.

I wore his name

I wore the POW/MIA bracelet with the name Herndon Bivens. Over the years I have wondered what happened to him. It is nice to finally see a photo of the hero that served us.

I also wore the bracelet

I too, wore a bracelet for Herndon Bivens. I never knew what happened to him until tonight. On D-Day, in memory of my parents both WWII vets, I was inspired to look up Herndon. I am sorry that he did not survive Vietnam. I thank him posthumously and his family for his service.
