Mamaroneck Youth Killed In Viet Nam

MAMARONECK-
David Porterfield, 20, of 1015 Old Post Road, was killed July 18 in Operation Hastings in Viet Nam. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.D. Porterfield, were notified today.
A 1964 graduate of Mamaroneck High School where he was a football, baseball and swimming star, Porterfield enlisted in the Naval Reserve and after training at Great Lakes, Ill., and St. Albans Hospital, L.I., he volunteered for tranfer to Fleet Marines and assignment in Viet Nam. After further training at Camp LeJeune, N.C., he went to Viet Nam on May 13.
In his last letter home he said he was embarking on a big operation and wouldn't be able to write for two weeks. He was part of a rear security guard in Operation Hastings just south of North Vietnamese line.

Semper Fidelis, Doc!

I'll always love you

I was Dave's fiancee - he was the love of my life. I still have the last letter I wrote to him which was returned " undeliverable". I still have all his letters & everything he ever gave me.I am in touch with his sister Pam who lives near me here in Florida.I hope to see him when I die.

Semper Fi Dave

Dave and I competed in Swimming and basebll against each other in HS. Although I went to Stepinac my best friend was Billy Bach, we all did some partying together and got to know what a great guy Dave was. The summer he died I had already enlisted to be a Corpsman like Dave. His memory was with me in Nam as it is today. We will always be Brothers. I only hope I served my Marines as good as he served his. My book is dedicated to Dave and 3 other Good Corpsmen friends on this wall
