My LT on Conthien (Alpha 4)

I was STU's RTO and Forward Observer. I was with him the morning he was killed. It was about 6AM we were both in the OSI tower and it was my turn to the leave the tower and get the gun crews up for a fire mission. STU told me to stay with the radio that he would get the crews up. We had been receiving heavy 120mm mortar fire every day. As soon as STU started up the hill the NVA Forward Observer called the mortar to fire. Only one round was fired and landed directly in front of STU. I was heart broken. STU was an all American guy and all the men loved him and would follow him anywhere. I have carried the guilt of that day that it wasn't me all these years. I am 75 and I have tried to live a good life to honor STU everyday.

To my friend Stu Binkley

Stu Binkley we’re best friends at Ft. Sill Artillery School. He and I were seated next to each other as we flew to Vietnam. We were both assigned to 8/4 Arty on the DMZ, I was in A Btry and he was in C Btry. He was killed on June 30, 1971. Stu was such a fine person and a great friend. I will never forget him. What a loss.
