I still think of you

I’m 62 now, and have had my silver (aluminum) bracelet with your name since about 1972 or 1973. I live within sight of MCRD here in San Diego. I often think of you and hope you can one day be laid to rest in Arlington. You are not forgotten.

SEMPER FI

Shortly after graduating from Marine Corps boot camp at San Diego in 1972, I was in downtown Oceanside and came across a sidewalk booth selling POW bracelets. I rummaged through all of the bracelets looking for one that called my name. The one with an enlisted Marine (same as me) just stood out. I wore SGT GREGORY BENTON, JR. USMC 23 MAY 69 for the 4 years of my enlistment. During my first inspection after finding the bracelet, I was gigged for wearing civilian jewelry. On my second inspection, the Lieutenant was irate when he saw I was still wearing a civilian bracelet. He immediately made me take it off. When he inspected it, he paused for what seemed like 5 minutes (it was probably more like 30 seconds). He then informed me that I was wearing it on the wrong wrist and should always wear it on my right wrist because the left wrist was reserved for the watch. I was never gigged again. Rest in Peace fellow Marine. You will never be forgotten.
