Remembering “Pappy” on Memorial Day 2025

When I arrived at A CO, 229TH ASLT HELO BN, 11TH AVN GROUP, 1ST CAV DIV, as a new Warrant Officer pilot in 1970, I was a “new guy.” Paul was an “old guy,” meaning he had been there longer. His initials, “PM,” were “Papa Mike” in the phonetic alphabet we all used. We just called him “Pappy.” I never got to know him well as he was killed shortly after I arrived in country but, every Memorial Day I remember those who I knew or served with who didn’t get to come home, those “who gave the last full measure of devotion,” and their families.
Everyone who has lost a buddy in combat has wondered, “Why them and not me?” I take comfort in the sure knowledge that the God of the Bible is sovereign and His plans are perfect. We just have to do our part. Thank you, Lord, for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to die for our sins so we can be redeemed through the shedding of His blood on the cross. Thank you that He rose from the grave, demonstrating His power over sin and death and providing us hope for this life and for eternity.
John 3:16, John 14:6, 1 Corinthians 15:54-58

Thank You

Dear CWO Paul Moran, Thank you for your service as an Utility/Observation Helicopter Pilot with the 1st Cavalry. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is Advent. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.
