Ground Casualty
The 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division was dispatched to South Vietnam following the Tet Offensive in support of 3rd Marine Division forces deployed in Quang Tri Province. The brigade served from July 1968 until August 1971, contributing to the defense of the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. Divisional headquarters were located at Camp Red Devil on a portion of Dong Ha Combat Base, 13 kilometers (8 miles) northwest of Quang Tri city. On the afternoon of July 9, 1970, a brigade soldier was lost when he drowned near Mai Xe Chanh, eight kilometers (5.0 miles) northeast of Dong Ha. SGT Herbert D. Bemboom from 3rd Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, was reportedly swimming in an unauthorized area when the incident occurred. Because the location was not an authorized recreational area for enlisted personnel, no certified lifeguards were supervising the swimmers. His body was recovered. Bemboom was 21 years old.
