RICHARD MISHUK- REMEMBERED BY HIS FAMILY

There are 16 additional pictures for Richard Mishuk. They start with Richard as an infant until the photo of Richard, in country, with two other Marines. The pictures were provided by Richard's brother Dennis. The photos came mostly from a picture book Richard's parents kept after he went missing. The book was simply titled- U S MARINE. Thanks so much to Richard's parents and his brothers Dennis and Cletus.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Memories of a St. Paul MIA, 35 years later
Thirty-five years ago Oct. 19, Richard E. Mishuk, U.S. Marine Corps, was captured by Viet Cong forces northwest of Da Nang. For nearly three months units of the 1st Marine Division followed Mishuk's secretly marked trail from village to village.
Then, the trail disappeared. To this day the government of Vietnam has refused to release Mishuk, or his remains. The consequences of war last a long time.
Richard grew up in St. Paul. As a young boy he rode his bicycle on the city's streets. He went to the Minnesota State Fair, and he graduated from a local high school. The family tears have dried, but the ache continues for those who knew him and for many who did not.
I never met Mishuk, but I, too, grew up in Minnesota and attended Highland Park Junior High. I, too, was a Marine, and as such Mishuk was my brother, my buddy, my comrade.
For nearly 20 years, I have worn Mishuk's POW/MIA bracelet on my wrist.
I will remember him tomorrow, as I do every day. You should too.
The consequences of war last a long time.

Richard Mishuk- Remembered by Saint John's Prep School

Richard Mishuk was from Saint Paul, Minnesota and attended Saint John's Preparatory School near Saint Cloud. The high school was part of Saint John's College in Collegeville, Minnesota. Richard would have been in the Class of 1963 if he had finished school there.
His nickname was Dick. He played intramural touch football for at least two years, and was also on the newspaper/yearbook staff for one year. In 1961, he was listed as a touch football All Star. The dormitorys for the high school students were Saint Gregory's Hall and Saint Bede's Hall. Richard was a "Bedite".
The Sagatagan was Saint John's University yearbook and included the Prep School years through 1960. After 1960, the Prep School's monthly newspaper- The Prep World was collected at the end of the school year and served as the yearbook.
There are five pictures of Richard Mishuk from those school days. Four are from different school groups and one is a touch football picture. A sixth picture was cropped from a group photo. The story behind the photographs are from Saint John's and Saint Benedict's archivist Elizabeth Knuth. Thanks for the pictures goes to archivists Elizabeth Knuth and Peggy Roske, as well as the students and staff of Saint John's University.
Richard Mishuk is still MIA to this day. On October 19, 1966; Richard, along with Michael Burke and Leonard Lewandowski, went missing. Michael Burke and Leonard Lewandowski have memorial markers at Arlington National Cemetery. Richard Mishuk has a memorial marker at Minnesota's Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Richard is one of 32 Minnesotans of the Vietnam Era who are still Missing in Action.

Never Forget

I purchased my MIA bracelet back in 1990 while stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA going through SOI. I've worn that bracelet every day since, as a reminder of all who served before me and never came home. Semper Fi Marine! We'll never forget your sacrifice.
