Gratitude
Dear Captain Belcher
After reading about the battle in which you gave all, it must have been a terrible time. The date in which you gave all is what caught my eye. January 9, 1968 was likely a very good day for me. It was my 5th birthday. The youngest of seven children im sure there was a cake, a gift, friends, family....... fun. Thousands of miles away you were leading men into hellish conditions for myself & my family. I had no concept of your sacrifice then but I do now. A little over 13 years later I too would be in the Army . I was only a Spec/4 and only in peacetime. I eventually had a career as a police officer and 1st aid trainer. This pales in comparison to contribution & sacrifice made by yourself. Such a loss. You were obviously a very gifted young man. You likely could have avoided combat given your education. I guess that wasn’t your style. I thank God for men like yourself. I’m sure you were an excellent leader. I’m glad that date caught my eye. You obviously lived a great albeit short life. May you eternally rest in the peace you’ve earned where war does not exist. Know that your sacrifice is not forgotten.

Never Forgotten
CAPT Roland Belcher was survived by his wife and two children, as well as his mother. CAPT Belcher was an excellent athlete at West Virginia College, and during summer breaks, worked as a lifeguard at Columbus Pools.
He put others before himself.
Your sacrifice is not forgotten.
