Max liked his buddy's

The only man I ever loved in a lifetime was a close friend of yours. He died 1965. But he spoke about Max. When my brother was in Viet Nam, he sent me about Max's death.
So sad.

Surf Safari

In the Spring of 1967, we heard Max Lopez had been killed in Binh Dinh, Vietnam. This news reminded me of a day in 1964 when Max had just bought an old car he had rigged as a surf wagon—it was a woody or panel truck with long boards on top, as I recall. We were out of school for a three-day weekend. Could it have been Memorable day?

We were in Anaheim High School’s student parking lot and Lopez was gloriously happy. He and a group of friends were off on a surfing adventure. I wanted to go along, but I had to get to the night shift at John’s Richfield Station. Still, I was happy just knowing Orange County waves and sunshine would be populated by friends having fun.

Max, a SP4 Armor crewman had been killed, and it seemed impossible and completely unfair. How can such an awful thing be in the Land of the Free? One way or another our graduating class discovered how demons can win. God, we knew was invincible, but Baby Boomers; even under atomic bomb-proof desks, were not.

Thank You

Dear Sp4 Max Lopez, Thank you for your service as an Armor Crewman. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. The 45th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon just passed, and it is still sad. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.
