Thank you, Freddie

Thank you for your sacrifice in a not so popular war. I miss you and our talks at The Plaza when I go home on vacations and think of you often. I come to this place to remember you and reminisce. I will never forget you, my friend. May you rest in peace, Marine. Semper Fi.

letter from Fred

We found a letter from Freddie while he was in Vietnam written to my mother (his Aunt Ginny). It is dated Jan. 1967. It is a picture frozen in time for us. In his own spelling and grammar, it reads:
Hello
I got your cookies! OUTSTANDING! The guys in my squad wish to thank you and congradulate you on your cookies. that brandy topped it beautifully. They moved us off of hill 41. were now on a rest and recupperation hill. We took 60% casulities, I even got a purple heart nothing really great. But we did kill many, many gooks. The Regemental C.O. said were the best company he's ever had. (I agree)
I see Patsy [his sister] getting married, I hope she'll be happy. I'm not sure where were headed for next. I've heard talk of heading South. I think about 50 to 100 miles south of Cho Li.
I bet you think that Viet Nam is always hot and humid, Well for the month we've been freezing our buns at night and sometimes during the day. the hot season will come in late Feb. and early Mar., I don't know which is worst.
I'll send you some flicks of hill 41 when we get them developed. This hill were on now i quite secure, we cant bye beer or whisky from the ville, or pay a visit to the local house of ill reput. BUT, we have two of the finest quartz of Seagrams 7 youve ever seen, and lots of ice and mix plus we have socialized with a couple of young ladies from the ville. O yes, I'm becoming quite effective with the language over here. very proud of myself. Well I have to write Ma & Dad a letter so I'll be signing off for now. Thanks again for the cookies Love Fred
P.S. please excuse spelling & writing but being over here and soing the things I have too. Well you lose a lot of the old touch.
P.S. again, I made another rank Lance Corporal
