Remembering a High School friend

Jim was a senior at Camp Lejeune High School when I was a freshman ... He was "all state" in every sport -- star quarterback in football, star catcher in baseball and I think captain of the basketball team ... I was one of 2 freshmen to make the varsity baseball team -- and I was also a catcher ... Jim was bigger than life to me and Coach McGhee simply let Jim mentor and help groom me into that position ... I was in my junior year of college in 1969 and still recall the shock and disbelief I had, when I heard he had died in Vietnam -- but, I will always remember how he so kindly and patiently helped a little young 9th grader become a better baseball player and person!

Hall of Distinction recipient

Jim Barrett was named to Camp Lejeune High School's Hall of Distinction, class of 2002. He was honored for his academic and athletic achievements while attending CLHS. He will never be forgotten by his classmates and friends. His photo still remains posted on the walls of CLHS. Those of us who were younger and didn't have the pleasure of knowing him, honor him. He would have been an asset to the Class of '67. I wish we had known you.
