Tragedy of War
Douglas Henning served with 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry (Currahees), 101st Airborne Division.
On August 8, 1968 the following article appeared in the Suburban Press, Orchard Park, New York:
"A monument in Memorial Park just west of the Four Corners is a constant reminder of the men who have left Orchard Park in defense of their country - some to never return. Each year on Memorial Day, a grateful citizenry gathers around the engraved monument in an impressive commmunity tribute to its veterans.
Cut in the stone are time spans of three wars - World Wars I and II and the undeclared conflict in Korea. Like an omen the dates of each conflict vividly remind that the span of peace between each is drastically shorter.
Now a fourth date, the beginning of another undeclared war in Vietnam which is taking its toll on our community, must be added. The concluding date, if there is to be a conclusion, is known only to God. In the meantime, the casualty list continues to grow with names like Captain Robert B. Beale, Warrant Officer Charles C. Wilcox, Army Medic William Mason and now Private Douglas A. Henning, who was brought home this week.
THe community shares the grief of these families. And the loss of these brave young men -- and those who have gone before them in other wars -- will never be forgotten. But how inadequate each of us must feel when we ask ourselves why the tragic, senseless cost of war hasn't taught civilized men to live in peace."
Douglas Allen Henning was born August 3, 1947 and his home of record was Orchard Park, New York. He was the son of Hugh A. and Verna Reh Henning; brother of Dale, Ronald and Jeffrey. He graduated from Orchard Park High School in 1965. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Orchard Park, with full military honors. Along with several others from Orchard Park, Doug is mentioned in the Book, "Shrapnel In The Heart." God rest your soul, Currahee.
