"Big Walt" Hall was an Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity brother at the
University of Maine at Orono. Big Walt used to come by the stack
carrels in the library when I was in grad school [a lonely
occupation] and keep my spirits up with a joke or just plain
camaradarie. I had been discharged from the Army a number of
years before VietNam heated up, and it was somewhat in the
background of my mind as I pursued a very challenging career
in the military/aerospace electronics industry. When I learned
of Walt's death, the pain of VietNam became very real and
personal. I wrote a letter to his family expressing my sincere
condolences and sent it to the UMaine Alumni asking them to
forward it to his family because I did not have the address. I'm
not sure it was ever received. Big Walt meant a lot to us. He is
missed.
