Ground Casualty

SGT Richard L. Moreno and SGT Robert L. Gunther were cannoneers serving with C Battery, 7th Battalion, 9th Artillery, 54th Artillery Group, II Field Force, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. Deployed in support of combat operations in Military Region III, their unit used the M102 towable 105 mm howitzer. During the last quarter of 1967, 7/9th Arty was installed at Long Thanh Airfield in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. On the early evening of November 23, 1967, Moreno and Gunther were attempting to excavate the ground using explosives. When the charge failed to detonate, they approached to investigate when an explosion occurred. Both men sustained fatal blast injuries to the body. A Fellow Gunther

No relation, but just happened to spot your name on the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington DC yesterday. I wasn't looking for another Gunther, but having the same name yours jumped out at me. I had my 7 year old son with me and I think him seeing your name had more of an impact on him than just a bunch of random names would have. I think you made it a little more real for him, the sacrifice you all had made in the name of freedom and democracy. I will visit your name every time I come to The Wall. Thanks, man.
