AFA Remembrance
I entered Admiral Farragut Academy in 1960. Dennis Babers was our Company Commander. The following year Dennis was the Battalion Commander. As an eighth grader, he had no clue I even existed. But I knew who he was. following graduation in 1966 I attended a couple of years of college before enlisting in the Army. In 1971 I too ended up in Vietnam. I was a helicopter pilot but was fortunate enough to make it home.
Years later I got to fly a UH-60 Army Blackhawk to Farragut. I believe this was when I first learned of Dennis’ fate.
There was a little plate on the bottom of his Battalion Commander picture that read,
“Killed in Action - Vietnam”
I will never forget how shocked I was. So sad to see any Farragut graduates die over there, but especially a former Battalion Commander. I am certain there were many of us who must have served in Vietnam, but he was the only Farragut graduate who lost their life there.
Having served in Vietnam I think it affects you more if you know someone else who never came home. The Vietnam Wall is overpowering to those who served there.
Rest in peace Dennis. You left an impression on every Farragut cadet who attended in 1962. I hope we will meet again someday!!

Sacrifice
I never had the privelege of meeting Dennis. His Brave attempt to rescue one of his troops with disregard for his own life exemplifies character in the highest tradition of the Marine Corps.
