Ground Casualty
Bien Hoa Air Base was a U.S. and Republic of Vietnam Air Force military airfield located on flat grounds in a rural area across the Dong Nai River about 25 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of Saigon in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. On August 22, 1970, SGT Joseph D. Gagnon, an airman from the 303rd Munitions Maintenance Squadron, 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force, was fatally injured when a tractor with grass cutting attachments he was operating overturned on the north side of the base. Gagnon was pinned underneath the vehicle, sustaining crushing injuries to the head and chest. He died instantly. His body was transported to the 3rd U.S. Air Force Dispensary on base where medical staff pronounced him dead. Gagnon was 27 years old. His remains were released to Graves Registration personnel and transferred to the U.S. Army Mortuary at Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon. After processing, they were flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware before being returned to his family in Fort Kent, ME. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
