I played with Jim's brother Paul. Jim would come out and play ball with us. we lived in west Seattle on 45 Th street. I have seen his name on the wall. For some reason I would think of him when I was in Vietnam in 1972. RIP

I Will Never Forget What He Told Me

Jim and I were classmates at West Seattle HS. During my senior year I was living in downtown Seattle and we met one day for a cup of coffee before he was getting ready to deploy. We had a laughter filled conversation, as would be expected but then Jim said something that I will never forget. He told me "I don't think I will be coming back." What do you say to someone who has just told you that? I denied the thought at the time, but when I received notice of his death it totally crushed my heart as I am sure it did many. I am turning 70 next Friday and have lived a full life because of the sacrifice Jim made to our country. I wish to honor him today as I watch the documentary on Viet Nam. I hope we never forget those who served and who are still loved, and missed daily.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC James Herbert Fife Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
