Would I have life if not for Sgt. Armentrout?

My father rarely spoke of his service, but one story he told us kids was that of a day when another soldier was sent out on mission in my father's place.
You see, my father knew how to type quickly and accurately and was needed on base to replace someone who had been sent home. He was replaced was replaced by another soldier who was sent out to fight. He found out the whole platoon had been killed later. Everytime he would mention this, he seemed to get a bit quiet. Anyone who knows my dad, knows how unusual that is.
A few years ago, there was a traveling model of the memorial wall. My then husband and I took my dad. After marveling at the whole display of flags and their various meanings, he went straight to the volunteer and asked for the name Armentrout. He told her it was the only name he remembered and then retold us the story. In that place, standing in front of all those names, it was very surreal.
I think about Sgt. Armentrout often. Would I even be if it were not for this chance moment?
Regardless, thank you Sgt. Armentrout, and your whole family!

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Stanley Willia Armentrout, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
