The Track Meet

Well, it's Memorial Day and I'm sad about MIAs in general, and Mike in particular Mike may be the only one that I knew personally. He was JC Hixons cousin and I went to school with JC. We played sports together for the St Francis Indians and my remembrance is about a track meet in Norton. Mike and I were both seniors and were both anchoring our mile relay teams. When I got the baton, we were in second place with Norton (Mike) not far behind in third. It seems silly in retrospect, but I was mortified by the possibility that Hixons cousin might overtake me, and I avoided certain embarrassment by running my career best 440. Now, to be honest, it was only 55 seconds, but was my fastest by a second and I never matched it again. So Mike was my inspiration. He probably had a faster split than me, but his team left him too far back to overcome the distance.
