Final Mission of EN2 Dallas D. Cummings

EN2 Dallas D. Cummings was a navyman serving on LCU-1482. The Landing Craft Utility (LCU) is a type of boat used to transport equipment and troops to the shore. They are capable of transporting tracked or wheeled vehicles and troops from amphibious assault ships to beachheads, piers, or ramps. In early 1968, LCU-1482 was assigned to Naval Support Activity (NSA) at Da Nang in Quang Nam Province, RVN. During February, while in the throes of the Tet Offensive, NSA Da Nang craft provided logistical support for the besieged city of Hue. They were escorted into the battle zone by Navy river patrol boats and helicopter gunships. Despite the cover, craft were ambushed and attacked with varying degrees of damage and personnel loss. On February 18, 1968, Cummings was at the Hue ramp in Thua Thien Province when LCU-1482 received enemy mortar fire. He was fatally injured after sustaining fragmentation wounds.
