In Memoriam - John LeGro
This posting is written with the gracious permission of Shirley Cook, Joe Cook's sister-in-law, and Gina Erickson, John LeGro's daughter. Most of us who served with Joe also served with John. He was on his second tour in 1969, having been part of the original Marine landing force in 1965. He was our "older brother", whose knowledge and experience significantly helped us all. I know that at least two of our brothers who have posted Remembrances for Joe have passed away, but for those who remain and still "check in" here, please know that John passed away on January 9, 2025, after a long, hard battle with many medical issues. We may thank God for the gift of John's life and remember his strength, honor, service, sacrifice, and friendship, just as we do for Joe. And please remember to pray for Shirley and Gina and their families. Our Marine brotherhood never ends - Semper Fi.

Joel was 3 years older than me and attended a one room school (Brink) as did I. Our teacher was Miss Rathburn at that time.

December 23, 2024 - Remembering You Today, Joel
It has been 55 years, Joel, but please know you are remembered and honored by all your fellow Marines who knew you and served with you. My prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, my Brother Marine - you have earned it. I visited our friend John LeGro in Arizona last month, and we shared our good memories of you and our photographs of the three of us.

Semper Fi, Joel - remembering you especially today.
Fifty-four years ago today, Joel, we were coming back into the 1/1 Battalion area from Duc Ky and La Tho Bac. May you rest in God's peace, my brother, it was an honor to serve with you. May your family know you will never be forgotten. I am attaching a photo of me, you, and John LeGro taken at Stack Arms during our Charlie Company In-Country two day R&R during the first week of that December.

You will always be remembered
Joel, today is the anniversary of your death. I was with you that day when you tripped the booby trap as we were on the path entering our base camp. You are missed and will never be forgotten. I think of you often and send my prayers for you. Rest in God’s arms, Joel. Semper Fidelis!
