I was on that patrol, 3/24/1969.

I was 19 years old that day, one month from my 20 birthday. I was at the tail end of the column when the gun fire erupted. After the fire fight, I was told how you died trying to save Playford. I recall seeing you and Playford when we were in base camp a few times, but we never talked to each other, as I recalled. I did not know that you were awarded the Medal of Honor until the early 1970's, when I got station at Camp Lejeune. I saw your picture on the wall in my barracks hallway. I told some of my buddies that I was on that patrol in March of 69. Now, I am 74 years old served and 25 years in the Corps, but I have never forgot that day, nor you and Playford.

Ronnie Coker in country school

Ronnie was the only classmate my brother had at District 78, country grade school. Ronnie had two brothers and a sister. One of his brothers, Dean, was my only classmate. Both brothers deceased, his sister Janet, still lives in the Alliance, Nebraska area. Ronnie never gave up in his final hours, I've been told. In memory of him, a bit of Hiway has been named after him. It leads off of Nebraska Highway 2 just east of Alliance, leading to the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery. Ronnie was always in the mix of guys finding something to do during recess at Dist. 78. He was a fun-loving guy, yet very devoted to whatever he believed in. He believed in our country. He sacrificed his life serving our country as a marine. Semper Fi, Ronnie.
