Dear Uncle Jimmy
To my uncle Jimmy/James,
I’m not sure what name I would call you by. I’m not sure of how often I would see you if you were still around. The only fact I’m sure of is that neither of these things matter. I am sure that you would have been an incredible uncle to me. How do I know this? I think it’s from all of the stories I’ve heard about you. Or perhaps it’s from all of the pictures I’ve seen of you. You seem to be worlds away in those photos, but your unyielding sense of love and compassion for the world around you seeps through in those images. My mom tells me you liked to read, is that true? The coincidence is that I do too. I would like to think that you would enjoy A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. In the end, the lead character gives it all up for the good of his country and for the people he loves most, just as you did. You did the bravest thing Uncle Jimmy and even though your time on earth was cut short before we could meet, I still find pride and respect in your sacrifice.
I wish we could have met in the proper way, and that I could have had more memories of you than just letters and photographs. But you want to know something? Its like what J.K. Rowling once wrote, “The ones we love never truly leave us.” And I don’t think you ever left. I think you’re around in every second of every day, whether I notice it or not. That’s the funny thing about love; it tends to be passed on. The undying love my mom and grandmother held for you found its way to me. And I am extremely grateful for that. In this life and the next, you are the best uncle I could have every asked for.
From your niece with love,
Jaclyn Younger

Remembering An American Hero
Dear PFC James Richard Clifcorn, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter

Another Maryknoller Remembers
I too attended your funeral while a seminarian at Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn, Ilinois in 1967. We were only causal friends but as your underclassman by one year, I admired you immensely. Your were everything Maryknoll
embodied in us: warm, funny, compassionate, generous and loving. You are missed. I will be memorializing you this Veterans' Day - 2012. You remain in my thoughts and prayers. I hope to meet you again in the afterlife when my time comes.
