Final Mission of CPL Bobby J. Clark
On August 12, 1968, a M76 Otter amphibious cargo carrier from Otter Platoon, Headquarters & Service Company, 3rd Motor Transportation Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, was transporting troops on the beachfront a ½ mile from the mouth of the Cua Viet River in Quang Tri Province, RVN, when it hit a landmine of undetermined size while running in deep water. Three Marines were killed in the blast. They included CPL Bobby J. Clark, GSGT George R. Claypool, and SSGT Franklin M. Ellinger. Another two Marines were injured.
