A good friend

Al Ammann was an OCS classmate of mine at Fort Sill, OK. He was a quiet person but always friendly. He and I were among the classmates assigned to counter-mortar radar training and sent to Vietnam. We traveled to San Francisco on our way to Fort Lewis, Washington, where we were shipped to Vietnam. I ran into Al in San Francisco, the last time I saw him. Most of us were improperly assigned when we arrived, but the Pentagon tracked us down. We all got assigned to a radar detachment as intended. But word was that Al was not permitted to leave his unit. Based on his date of death, it appears that he agreed to a six month extension so that he could be discharged thereafter. Based on what I've read here, he was killed when a helicopter he was in was shot down by enemy fire. I lost a grammar school friend who also died during his six month extension. Rest is peace, Al.

Vietnam Wall of Remembrances

Albert was a roommate of mine for several years at the University of Wichita. He was a quiet individual, but a great "roomie" and we got along well with the other three of us in the upstairs at 1537 Fairmount. I was greatly saddened when I learned of his passing. Today I visited the traveling "Wall" and ran my hand over his name for quite some time. Albert, God bless you always for your sacrifice.

do no stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

As long as you are remembered you will never die...
