One Heck of a Marine
Bob and I were in OCS & TBS @ Quantico together. We got separated on arrival in RVN and I heard of his death from another Lt. I never realized when I later joined K/3/1 that he had been in the same company. We didn't often speak of the dead. It wasn't until last years 3/1 reunion memorial service, when Sgt Maj Crockett spoke of how much he had "loved" Bob as only a 1st Sgt can that I realized I had followed in his footsteps. He was a great Marine and we all miss him.

Your friend
Dear Bob,
I am the Son of Richard F. Stewart,LTC.,US Army Ret., your best friend from Boulder City. My Father has a picture of you that my Grandmother took just before you left for the Marine Corps, you look happy and young, standing next to a car. I'm not sure if that was your car or not, you had short hair, you may have already been through boot camp, and getting ready for OCS. I'll have to ask my Grandmother. My Father made it through Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, then went on as an Infantry officer and eventually retired after about 23 years. He now works as a program manager in the Veterans Affairs in Washington state. He likes helping veterans, I think it makes him feel better. He took a lot of men into the jungle in his helicopter, and he took a lot of bodies out. My Father has a rubbing of your name he keeps in his desk, he talks about you sometimes. My Grandmother does too, and she cries.
I joined the Army, just like my Father,Grandfather and Grandmother, and although I have left now, I still feel for my brothers, every memorial day.
Good Bless you, Bob.
