Joe was severely wounded in combat by an undetermined explosion and died aboard the hospital ship USS Sanctuary.

The provincial capital, Quang Tri City, was a principle battleground during the 1968 Tet Offensive, and was briefly overrun by North Vietnamese troops. The well known Battle of Khe Sanh was a part of the North's steady efforts to occupy the whole of the province.

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. I am 73 and have lived a long and fulfilling life. It is tragic you never had that same opportunity. May you rest in eternal peace.

53 years ago you gave your life for our great country. I remember all the good times we shared growing up in Shelby. Every once in a while we use to get into trouble together. Thank you for your service ! All gave some, you gave all. 18 forever Joey, your memory lives on!
