Remembering Uncle Petey

I remember as as young girl going to my great grandmother's house and always see this big portrait of a handsome young man dressed in his Army uniform and also his hat and metals were also on display !! I would stand at the entrance to the den and just stare at that picture and one day my grandma caught me admiring the photo, she stood behind me and asked "do you know who that is??" I shook my head no. She then said "that's my brother Petey he's your great uncle!" I asked "where is he now how come I've never seen him in person"? Her eyes watered and she was obviously trying to hold back her tears "he was a soldier for the Army and he went to the Vietnam war. And unfortunately lost his life while in battle! I was shocked and asked "why did he do that? why did he go to war and leave grandma and you? And she said very proudly "So you, me and everyone in this world could be free, free to go to the store, free to go to school, even go to church he sacrificed his life so we could be who we are today!" I wrapped my arms around my grandma's neck and I squeezed so tight and I said " I'm sorry you lost your brother but I'm proud of him to and I love him very much! I'm so lucky I have uncle Petey and he's the best uncle in the world!" And again today I still say it's a honor that your my uncle Petey and your the braves and most courage man in our family wished I could of met you face to face I've heard you where one hell of a guy and you were the best uncle!! Rest in Paradise with your mom dad, brothers, sister and nieces and nephew!!! Heavens going to be off the hook this memorial day!! Forever in our hearts!! Your A legend and legends never die!!
