Doc Did his job

On 4-13-69 our Alpha Troop was involved in a rescue mission of a Platoon of Air Scouts who were pinned down with 2 KIA. In forming up our box ( common tactic in armored units ) to assault this bunker complex our superiors let things get out of hand and WE lost control of the assault. Doc Chandle was on my Track that day and when we engaged we started taking casualties right away. Doc asked me for my m-16. He said, I have to go up front someones hit can I use your M-16 " As I fired my m-60, I said sure. Little did in know it would be the last time I saw Doc or my m-16. That day 9 men were KIA. It was the single worst day for Alpha Troop during the six years in combat.

" Doc " Charles Chandler

Doc was doing his duty on 4-13-69. That day he was on my vehicle as we assaulted a bunker complex. Shortly after the contact began over the unimaginable noise of contact.......he said to me " someone's been hit at the front of the column, I gotta go up, let me borrow your M-16." I gave it to him and that was the last I saw of him or my M-16.
Because of poor maneuvering and communication the assault got OUT OF CONTROL and far too many great soldiers were killed needlessly. Doc was wounded on 4-13 and died on 4-18. Seven Alpha Trooper's were KIA that day.
By the grace of god.............

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Charles Chandler, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
