A town proud of its hero.

Beaver, PA was so fortunate to have had Mike, a man looked up to by so many of us. He was a star. As Dick Melkerson noted in his memorial piece, he was an outstanding football player. I can vividly remember when I heard of Mike's death and I seem to remember that he may have been the first of our Beaver service members to have been killed in the war. I served two tours on a destroyer in Vietnam and lost a number of friends. I will always remember each of them and their sacrifice for our country. They are all heros. Thank you for your service Mike and Beaver will never forget you.

a Classmate

Mike was a true great classmate and soldier. I was on the ground the night Mike was airborne above us as an artillery FO. When the enemy situation required artillery support, Mike responded. Mike's tour was up but he volunteered to take the place of his replacement since he knew the area and believed he could render better support. His helicopter was downed by enemy fire.

We Will Remember

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

SP5 Richard A. Melkerson, Jr.

I grew up in Mike's hometown of Beaver, Pa., and he was and still is, our hero. He grew up in the projects in Vanport and his nickname was SLUGGO. He will always be remembered!
