Ground Casualty

PFC Wendell L. Carter was a clerk-typist serving with the 75th Supply Company, 277th Supply & Service Battalion, 506th Field Depot, Army Support Command Saigon, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. In the summer of 1967, the 506th Field Depot maintained warehouses and storage areas throughout Saigon while it waited for its permanent location under construction to open at Long Binh Post. A main logistical supplier, the 506th was responsible for material support to U.S. and Free World Military Assistance Forces in Military Regions III & IV. Despite working in a rear echelon capacity, many clerks, cooks, and others with administrative and supply duties like Carter were required to participate in providing security on the perimeter of the base where they were assigned. On June 9, 1967, he was performing guard duty at Long Binh when heavy rains caused the bunker he was sheltering in to collapse. Carter was admitted to a military hospital where he expired four days later. He was 18 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
