A Man Who Should Never Be Forgotten

Rod Carter quite literally saved my career and my life. I decked a squadron mate at the 6th Fleet Change of Command when the inspection party was two ranks down and one file over. It created quite a stir. Rob Carter was being relieved as Commanding Officer of VA-34. At his special request, he was allowed to handle my discipline as his last official act as squadron CO. He understood the situation and his punishment assigned was 30 days confinement to the ship during our next 35 day at sea period. He also wrote my first fitness report, and it was a masterpiece of the double entrendre. He stated: "Ensign McCullen is an officer willing to take matters into his own hands" in referring to the decking of my fellow officer during the change of command inspection. He died a hero in the Oriskany fire in October 1966.

Remembering my Commander Rodney B. Carter

CDR Rodney B. Carter was my commanding officer in Attack Squadron 34 aboard the USS Saratoga in 1965. Stationed in Cecil Field, Fla, we made a cruise to the Med. CDR Carter was a great officer, always interested in his men. I was in the Admin Office and took care of officers Records. He was always kind, respectful, and fun. He told us many a time, 'You will go to the Squadron party, and you will have a good time" I still say that today in 2021. I was a Yeoman 3rd Class and enjoyed my time served with CDR Carter and miss him to this day. Rest in Peace. James Resh, YN3, Indiana
