Memorial Day 1987

I met Mrs. Caron, Wayne's mother at a Memorial Day ceremony honoring this valorous young man. I told her that her son was my hero. She thanked me with tears in her eyes.
I was stationed aboard the USS Caron, a 570 foot long, Spruance class destroyer in 1987. We hosted this memorial service and Wayne's mom came. I'll never forget learning about him, his sacrifice and what Valor means. I teach his story to my students every year.

An unexpected loss

I met Wayne at 7th Marines aid station briefly on my way for R&R. He gave me a shot and we got to talking about Massachusetts. My sister was a Navy nurse and is buried close in 51-2575.
