Training mates
David and I went through training together just prior to going over. We rode a bus together to Vallejo from Coronado and stayed together in San Berardino with other friends awaiting our flight to Nam. I learned of his death while there. Crushed.

honoring you...
Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. While all deaths in Vietnam are tragic that you died one day after your 21st birthday is especially so. May you rest in eternal peace.

Final Mission of SN David A. Carli
On March 3, 1968, a U.S. Navy LCPL (Landing Craft Personnel [Large]) patrol boat was proceeding west to Bridge Ramp at Dong Ha on the Cua Viet River from Naval Supply Activity at Da Nang with a 1st Platoon searchlight team and boat crew when it was sunk with all hands by an unknown-type explosive device. A total of six personnel were lost in the incident: two members from the 1st Searchlight Battery, PFC Richard S. Ginder and LCPL Alfred W. Speyer; and four persons from the Dong Ha Security Group, Detachment Cua Viet, Naval Support Activity, Da Nang: SN David A. Carli, SN Michael J. Farris, BM3 Gary A. Larsen, and EN3 Randall L. Young. The remains of Carli, Larsen, and Young were not recovered until five days after the sinking. The other Americans were found the same day. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
