First Killed in Echo

Phil was the newest in out squad, Mike Worth & I were both "old timers" in 3d Squad, E/2/26 with about a month in country, I first met Phil in Phu Bai in our rear area after we came from the field, Phil was occupying my bunk! We patrolled & were on ambushes daily before Christmas 67', Constant contact with NVA,
The night Phil was killed our squad leader, PFC Mike Lucas initiated the ambush of about 150 NVA, Fight was intense in an open area sparsely covered with vegetation, We won! NVA pulled back & Phil was killed on a sweep of the battlefield, 2 bullets to the abdomen through vest. Later I saw another replacement on hill 861-A wearing the vest Phil was wearing, two bullet holes in the lower left front panel. God rest his soul....None of us knew him well....But we never forgot him! Semper Fi! * Worth's post 16 years ago..

Remembering An American Hero

Dear PVT Phillip Gene Cantrell, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

My love will always be with you

From the first days we met in 1965, Tulsa, Ok, I learned to love you but and your step mom and your Dad, learned about your mom and your siblings. We grew up together beginning in high school, fell in love and drifted apart..was called by your Dad on Christmas Eve only to learn of your passing now after 45 years I still remember you on your birthday. Ours were only 12 days apart. I hope to venture to your site to say Goodbye but havn't made it there because I am not sure I could say those words. Have been to the Memotiral when is come to Tulsa and even to Tahlequah, recently to run my hand over your name until it feels like buring coal. I will love you forever, Phillip ( David)
