Final Mission of SP4 Jerry W. Campbell
SP4 Jerry W. Campbell was a flight-certified helicopter mechanic serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. On July 25, 1967, Campbell was flying as observer/gunner on a single-ship OH-13S scout mission over the Bong Song plains north of LZ English in Binh Dinh Province, RVN. During the flight, the crew observed a Viet Cong (VC) suspect hiding in a bamboo stand. They landed and Campbell dismounted in an attempt to capture the VC. While trying to flush him from the bamboo, a grenade tossed by the insurgent landed at Campbell's feet. The blast sent shrapnel under his “chicken plate” body armor, critically injuring him. The airman was flown to the 67th Evacuation Hospital at Qui Nhon where he expired shortly after. Campbell was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. To My Brother
I was just 6 when you died, but I remember it like it was yesterday. The car coming down the drive and the Army representative informing us of what happened changed our family forever. It changed dad for sure. But like our father, all of your brothers served America in the military and I hope that would have made you proud. You have nephews that still serve today. Your nephew Michael carries your middle name and has the flag that flew over the Capitol in your honor. I have one of the shell casings from the volley that was offered at your graveside before "Taps" was played. One day my son will have it, and his son after him. You are not forgotten in our family. But my joy is knowing that I will see you again, and unlike the last time I saw you, you will be whole. Enjoy your time with Pop before I get Home. See ya soon bro.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear SGT Jerry Wayne Campbell, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
