Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Philip Michael Callan, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

My Son

He was born June 17, 1945 Oakland, California. Attended schools in Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School June 15, 1962. While a student at Oakland Junior College he worked part time at the university of California Testing Laboratory, during that time he moved to Berkeley. He was a Lab Assistant. The Marine Corps came out where one could enlist for 2 years so Philip enlisted in the Marine Corps so he would be home sooner and finish his education. He planned to study architecture. One of his subjects in school was drafting. He received very high grades in the subject. He had such a bright future ahead, his death has been such a great tragedy to all of us. Philip Michael Callen was killed October 4, 1966 south of DaNang, Vietnam. He was the Fireteam leader of the 2nd squad of the 3rd Platoon of their company of the 3rd Platoon of their company in Vietnam, during a search and clear operation, south of Danang, an enemy mortar exploded close to Philip. He was seriously wounded by shell fragments. He was evacuated by helicopter from the field to the U.S. Naval hospital but failed to respond and died of his multiple wounds. His Captain, J.A. Linnemann said, 'He was one of the finest Marines he had ever known, his exemplary conduct, devotion to duty, and singular determination to do every job well were qualities that all of us respected.'

NATIVE AMERICAN PRAYER

It is said a man hasn't died as long as he is remembered. This prayer is a way for families, friends and fellow veterans to remember our fallen brothers and sisters. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die
